Historical Information
Egypt moved away from the United Arab Republic-era roundel in the early 1970s, adopting the red-white-black marking that became standard on Egyptian combat aircraft. The change coincided with a major period of military transition as Egypt moved from the War of Attrition into preparations for the 1973 October War.
The modern roundel has appeared on an exceptionally wide range of aircraft, including the MiG-21, Su-7, Mirage 5, F-4E Phantom II, Mirage 2000, F-16 Fighting Falcon, MiG-29, Rafale, C-130 Hercules, and numerous helicopters and training aircraft. Its long service life makes it appropriate for aircraft from the 1970s through contemporary Egyptian aviation.
Although the basic national colors have remained consistent, roundel size and visibility have varied considerably between aircraft types and camouflage schemes.
The modern Egyptian roundel should not be confused with the two-star United Arab Republic marking used from 1958 into the early 1970s. Reference photographs are recommended for exact roundel size and placement on a specific Egyptian aircraft.
