These 1-300 Egyptian Air Force roundel decals reproduce the national aircraft marking adopted during the United Arab Republic era and retained by Egypt into the early 1970s. The design reflected the new red, white, black, and green pan-Arab identity introduced when Egypt and Syria formed a political union in 1958.

Historical Information

The United Arab Republic was created in February 1958 by the union of Egypt and Syria. A new national flag and military identity accompanied the union, and Egyptian aircraft replaced the older green-and-white roundel with the new UAR-style insignia. Syria left the union in 1961, but Egypt continued using the United Arab Republic name until 1971 and retained this aircraft marking into 1972.

This roundel became closely associated with the great Arab-Israeli air campaigns of the 1960s. Egyptian aircraft carrying it included the MiG-15, MiG-17, MiG-19, MiG-21, Il-28, Tu-16, and Su-7, along with transports and helicopters. The marking appeared during the 1967 Six-Day War and the subsequent War of Attrition.

By 1972, Egypt transitioned to the simpler red-white-black roundel that remains associated with the modern Egyptian Air Force.

This roundel is specifically associated with the UAR-era Egyptian marking system and should not be confused with either the earlier 1945–1958 green-and-white insignia or the simpler red-white-black roundel introduced in the early 1970s.
