Historical Information

1-300 Benin – Togo – Mali – Niger Air Force Roundels

These 1-300 African air force roundel decals reproduce national aircraft markings for Benin, Togo, Mali, and Niger. The sheet is intended for modeling the small but historically interesting air arms that emerged across French West Africa after independence and developed during the Cold War.

All four countries became independent around 1960 and replaced French colonial identity with their own national colors and insignia. Their air forces remained relatively small, but they operated a varied mix of French, Soviet, Eastern European, and other imported aircraft for training, transport, liaison, reconnaissance, and light combat duties.

Political alignment changed over time. Benin and Mali, in particular, experienced periods of socialist or Marxist-oriented government and closer military links with the Soviet bloc, while Togo and Niger generally retained stronger Western and French connections. Those different relationships were reflected in the aircraft types seen in service.

Representative subjects include MiG-series fighters and L-29/L-39 trainers in Malian service, along with transports, utility aircraft, trainers, and light attack aircraft used by the other nations during the 1960s through the 1980s.

National insignia and aircraft inventories changed as governments and foreign relationships changed. Use period photographs when matching a specific marking to a particular aircraft and year.
