Historical Information
Colombian military aviation traces its origins to 1919, when Law 126 established aviation as the fifth arm of the Colombian Army and authorized the creation of a military aviation school. The first training aircraft included French-built Caudron G.3s, which arrived in Colombia in 1921. The air arm later developed into an independent service and became the Fuerza Aérea Colombiana.
Colombia has used several different national aircraft markings during its aviation history. Beginning in 1924, aircraft insignia increasingly incorporated the yellow, blue, and red colors of the Colombian flag. A new roundel was officially established in 1927, featuring the national colors with a central multi-pointed star. That version remained in use until 1953.
In 1953, the design was revised into the modern roundel represented by this decal sheet. The current insignia combines yellow, blue, and red sections with a white five-pointed star at the center. This basic design has remained the standard Colombian military aircraft marking for more than seven decades, although reduced-visibility versions have also been used on operational aircraft.
The Colombian roundel has appeared on a wide variety of aircraft throughout the Cold War and modern periods, including the F-47 Thunderbolt, F-80 Shooting Star, T-33, B-26 Invader, A-37 Dragonfly, Mirage 5, IAI Kfir, C-130 Hercules, OV-10 Bronco, A-29 Super Tucano, and numerous helicopters, transports, trainers, and reconnaissance aircraft.
Colombian military aircraft have been extensively employed in counter-insurgency, close-air-support, reconnaissance, transport, border security, and anti-narcotics operations. The distinctive FAC roundel has therefore appeared on everything from high-performance jet fighters to light attack aircraft and helicopters operating over Colombia’s mountainous and jungle terrain.
