Historical Information
This set represents subdued versions of the People's Liberation Army Air Force national aircraft insignia. The traditional PLA star-and-bar identification marking is rendered in reduced-contrast tones for modern tactical aircraft where bright red and yellow markings would stand out against operational camouflage.
The PLAAF developed from the air arm established after the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. Its national insignia is based on the red PLA star carrying the '8-1' symbolism of the People's Liberation Army, combined with horizontal bars that distinguish it as an aircraft marking.
As Chinese combat aircraft adopted increasingly modern grey camouflage and lower-visibility presentation, subdued versions of the national insignia became appropriate for front-line fighters, strike aircraft and support platforms. Exact shades and sizes vary by aircraft and time period.
Representative Aircraft: J-7, J-8, J-10, J-11, J-16, J-20, H-6, Q-5 and other PLAAF aircraft.
Use reference photos for the specific aircraft and era being modeled, especially on newer PLAAF types where the size, contrast and placement of subdued insignia may differ between units and production batches.
