Historical Information
Chilean military aviation traces its origins to 1913, when the country established its military aviation school and began organized military flying operations. On March 21, 1930, Chile combined the existing Army and Naval aviation services to create the independent Fuerza Aérea Nacional. In 1937, the service adopted its present name, Fuerza Aérea de Chile.
Chile used several different aircraft marking styles during the early years of military aviation. A new national insignia appeared in 1930, incorporating a shield divided into blue above and red below with a white star, reflecting elements of the Chilean coat of arms. This basic design became the classic FACh aircraft roundel and has remained closely associated with Chilean military aviation ever since.
During the Cold War, the FACh modernized rapidly with both European and American aircraft. The Hawker Hunter entered Chilean service beginning in 1967, followed during the 1970s by the A-37 Dragonfly and F-5E/F Tiger II. Later additions included the Mirage 50, Mirage Elkan, and eventually the F-16 Fighting Falcon, which remains one of the principal combat aircraft of the modern Chilean Air Force.
The Chilean insignia has appeared on a wide variety of aircraft, including the Vampire, F-80 Shooting Star, T-33, Hawker Hunter, A-37 Dragonfly, F-5E/F Tiger II, Mirage 50, Mirage Elkan, F-16 Fighting Falcon, as well as transports, trainers, helicopters, and reconnaissance aircraft.
