1-300 Brazil Air Force & Naval Aviation Roundels
These 1-300 Brazilian Air Force and Naval Aviation decals provide national aircraft markings for both the Força Aérea Brasileira (FAB) and Aviação Naval Brasileira. The sheet includes the distinctive Brazilian Air Force green-and-yellow star insignia as well as the Brazilian Naval Aviation blue, yellow, and green concentric roundel, allowing wargamers to represent aircraft from both major branches of Brazilian military aviation.
Brazilian military aviation developed through separate Army and Navy air arms during the early twentieth century. Brazilian Naval Aviation traces its official beginning to August 23, 1916, with the creation of the Naval Aviation School. The Navy operated its own aircraft until 1941, when Brazil consolidated Army and Navy aviation under the newly created Brazilian Air Force.
The Brazilian Air Force adopted a distinctive national insignia based on a stylized star derived from Brazil’s national colors and heraldry. Earlier versions of the star marking had already been used by Brazilian Army aviation during the 1930s. When the FAB was created in 1941, an updated form of the green-and-yellow star with central blue and white elements became the standard national marking.
Brazilian Naval Aviation was later re-established and developed primarily around helicopters and shipborne aviation. Its aircraft use a different national roundel consisting of concentric blue, yellow, and green circles, providing an immediate visual distinction from FAB aircraft. Brazilian naval aviation has operated helicopters such as the Sea King, Super Lynx, Esquilo, and Seahawk, as well as the A-4 Skyhawk, which restored a fixed-wing combat capability to the Brazilian Navy.
The FAB insignia has appeared on an exceptionally wide variety of aircraft, including the P-47 Thunderbolt, P-40, B-25 Mitchell, F-80 Shooting Star, Gloster Meteor, F-5 Tiger II, Mirage III, AMX, A-29 Super Tucano, and Saab Gripen, along with transports, maritime patrol aircraft, trainers, and helicopters.
