Historical Information
1-300 Australia Modern Low Visibility Black & White Roundels
This decal set represents a modern low-visibility treatment of the Royal Australian Air Force national roundel. The familiar kangaroo-centered insignia is rendered in black-and-white tones for use on tactical aircraft where the full red, white and blue marking would be too conspicuous.
The RAAF adopted its distinctive kangaroo roundel in 1956, replacing the plain red center inherited from the RAF-style marking. As camouflage and low-observable paint schemes became increasingly important, subdued versions of the national insignia appeared on operational aircraft while retaining the unmistakable kangaroo identity.
Black-and-white versions are especially appropriate for modern tactical, transport and support aircraft carrying reduced-visibility schemes. Exact size, tone and placement can vary by aircraft type and repaint period, so period photographs are recommended for precise modeling.
Representative Aircraft: F/A-18A/B Hornet, F/A-18F Super Hornet, EA-18G Growler, C-130 Hercules, AP-3C Orion and other modern RAAF aircraft.
These markings are intended for modern RAAF subjects where subdued national insignia were used in place of the traditional full-color roundel. Check photographs of the specific airframe and year being modeled for the most accurate placement and tone.
