This decal set reproduces the blue-and-white Royal Australian Air Force national roundels associated with Pacific operations from 1942 through the immediate postwar period. These markings were created by removing red from the earlier RAF-style insignia to reduce the chance of confusion with Japanese aircraft markings.
In 1942 the RAAF began deleting red from national markings on operational aircraft in the Pacific. The resulting blue-and-white roundels became a defining feature of Australian aircraft in the South West Pacific Area, with official proportions continuing to evolve as units repainted existing aircraft and new machines arrived.
The Pacific roundel appeared on fighters, bombers, maritime patrol aircraft and transports throughout the later years of World War II. Field repainting produced considerable variation in size, white-center diameter and exact positioning.
Representative Aircraft: P-40 Kittyhawk, Spitfire, Beaufighter, Beaufort, Boston, Hudson, Catalina, B-24 Liberator and C-47 Dakota.
Because 1942-1943 was a transition period, use period photographs whenever possible. Some aircraft temporarily carried altered RAF-style markings before receiving fully standardized RAAF Pacific roundels.
