Historical Information

1-300 Argentina Naval Aviation ARMADA – Black & White

These 1-300 Argentine Naval Aviation “ARMADA” decals reproduce the distinctive service identification lettering carried by aircraft of the Aviación Naval Argentina, the aviation branch of the Argentine Navy. The sheet includes both black and white ARMADA markings, allowing the appropriate contrasting color to be selected for different aircraft camouflage and paint schemes.

Argentine Naval Aviation formally dates to 1916 and developed into one of South America’s most capable naval air arms. The service has operated fighters, attack aircraft, maritime patrol aircraft, anti-submarine aircraft, trainers, transports, and helicopters in support of the Armada Argentina. Argentina later developed a significant carrier aviation capability with the aircraft carriers ARA Independencia and ARA Veinticinco de Mayo, operating fixed-wing aircraft at sea for several decades.

The word “ARMADA”, Spanish for “Navy,” became an important service identifier on Argentine naval aircraft. It clearly distinguished aircraft operated by the Navy from those of the Fuerza Aérea Argentina. Depending on the aircraft’s finish, the lettering could be applied in black or white to maintain sufficient contrast against the surrounding camouflage or paint scheme.

The ARMADA titles appeared on many of Argentina’s best-known naval aircraft. These included the A-4Q Skyhawk, S-2 Tracker, Super Étendard, T-34C Turbo Mentor, Sea King, and other fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. The Argentine Navy confirms that the Super Étendard entered the 2nd Naval Fighter and Attack Squadron in 1980, while the T-34C served with the Naval Aviation School.

Argentine Naval Aviation became internationally prominent during the 1982 Falklands/Malvinas War. Super Étendards conducted long-range anti-ship missions armed with AM39 Exocet missiles, while A-4Q Skyhawks, Trackers, helicopters, patrol aircraft, and other naval aviation assets also participated in the conflict.

The service remains active today with aircraft including P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft, Beechcraft B-200s, Sea Kings, and Fennec helicopters, continuing missions such as maritime surveillance, reconnaissance, anti-submarine warfare, search and rescue, and fleet support.
