Historical Information

Algeria achieved independence from France in 1962. The new state quickly established its own military aviation organization, building on a small core of Algerian pilots and technicians trained during the independence struggle and immediately after independence. Early Algerian aircraft markings replaced the French insignia associated with the colonial period.

Close ties with the Soviet Union strongly shaped the Algerian Air Force during the Cold War. Aircraft carrying Algerian roundels included the MiG-17, MiG-21, Su-7, MiG-23, MiG-25, Mi-8, and Mi-24, along with transports and trainers. Algerian combat units also deployed aircraft and personnel to Egypt during the 1973 October War.

Later Algerian aircraft continued to carry national roundels as the force expanded into one of the largest and most capable air arms in North Africa.

Algerian aircraft insignia have appeared in more than one graphic variation since independence. When modeling a specific airframe, period photographs are recommended to confirm the exact roundel form, size, and placement for the year being represented.
