Historical Information

During the interwar period, the French Marine Nationale developed an increasingly systematic method of identifying its light warships at a distance. Large hull numbers were painted prominently on torpilleurs and other small combatants, allowing individual ships and their divisional assignments to be recognized visually during fleet operations.

In April 1939, the identification system was standardized further by adding a letter ahead of the tactical number to identify the type of vessel. French torpilleurs received the prefix “T.” The following numbers indicated the ship’s assigned division and its position within that formation.

At the beginning of World War II, these markings were painted white with a distinctive black drop-shadow or false-relief effect, improving visibility against the ship’s gray hull. This decal sheet represents that highly visible 1939–early 1940 style used by French torpilleurs immediately before and during the opening months of the war.
