1-2400 French Contre-Torpilleurs Flotilla “White / Black Shadow” Pennant N
The decals are specifically sized to GHQ French castings but probably will work on other manufacture castings
Historical Information
France’s large contre-torpilleurs were a distinctive class of fast, heavily armed warships designed to operate with the fleet and to overpower conventional destroyers. Classes such as the Jaguar, Guépard, Aigle, Vauquelin, Le Fantasque, and Mogador families became some of the most recognizable French surface combatants of the interwar era.
In April 1939, the Marine Nationale standardized hull identification markings by placing a vessel-type letter ahead of the tactical number. Contre-torpilleurs were assigned the prefix “X.” The accompanying numbers identified the ship’s divisional assignment and its position within the formation, allowing commanders and lookouts to distinguish ships quickly at long range.
The original wartime markings were white with black shadowing, creating a three-dimensional appearance that stood out strongly against the gray hull. This decal sheet represents the 1939–early 1940 white-and-black identification scheme carried by French contre-torpilleurs at the beginning of World War II.
