As the "tip of the spear" during the Cold War, the Bulldogs were responsible for defending NATO's central region against potential Warsaw Pact aggression.
Aircraft and Missions
- F-15 Eagle: By 1980, the squadron was fully operational with the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle, having transitioned from the F-4 Phantom in 1977.
- Quick Reaction Alert (QRA): The Bulldogs maintained a constant 5-minute alert status, with armed F-15s ready to scramble to intercept unidentified or hostile aircraft entering NATO airspace.
- International Deployments: The unit frequently deployed for training and exchanges, including a 1984 exchange with the French Air Force and multiple "bare base" operations in Morocco during 1986 and 1987.
