During the 1980s, the 32nd Tactical Fighter Squadron (TFS) "Wolfhounds" was a premier United States Air Force unit based at Soesterberg Air Base in the Netherlands. The squadron held a unique status as the only American unit under the direct operational command of a foreign nation, the Royal Netherlands Air Force.
Key Developments in the 1980s
- Aircraft Transition: Having transitioned from the F-4E Phantom II to the F-15A/B Eagle in 1979, the squadron operated these models until 1983. In 1983, they upgraded to the more advanced F-15C/D Eagle, maintaining a strength of approximately 24 aircraft.
- Royal Status: The squadron was famously known as the "Royal United States Squadron." This unique title allowed them to incorporate the royal crest (crown and wreath) of the Dutch House of Orange-Nassau into their emblem—the only USAF unit permitted to display a foreign nation's royal insignia.
