The Imperial Russian Air Service (IRAS) in WWI started small but grew, becoming one of the world's first air forces, notably using the massive Ilya Muromets bombers, though facing huge industrial gaps against Germany. It operated under the Tsar's command, evolving from the Engineer Corps into a separate branch, but faced severe production issues and was effectively dissolved by the 1917 revolutions, transitioning into the Red Air Fleet (Soviet Air Forces) after the Bolshevik takeover.
