Historical Information
The Sangamon class consisted of four U.S. Navy escort carriers converted from large, fast fleet oilers: USS Sangamon (CVE-26), USS Suwannee (CVE-27), USS Chenango (CVE-28), and USS Santee (CVE-29). Their larger hulls, speed, fuel capacity, and stability made them especially capable escort carriers.
 
Key Historical Details
Class: Sangamon-class escort carrier; four ships in the class.
Commissioning: All four ships entered escort-carrier service during August and September 1942.
Aircraft Complement: Approximately 30 aircraft. Wartime air groups commonly combined F4F or FM-2 Wildcat and F6F Hellcat fighters with TBF or TBM Avenger torpedo bombers, depending on the date and assignment.
Wartime Service: The class supported Operation Torch and then served extensively in the Pacific, providing combat air patrol, antisubmarine protection, reconnaissance, and close air support during amphibious operations.
Fate: All four ships survived World War II despite severe combat damage to several members of the class; each was later decommissioned and scrapped.
