Historical Information
Shinyo was converted from the German passenger liner Scharnhorst after the vessel became stranded in Japan at the outbreak of war in Europe. Converted for the Imperial Japanese Navy and commissioned as an escort carrier in 1943, she was used primarily for convoy protection and aircraft transport.
