Historical Information
These 1-600 Peruvian Air Force and Naval Aviation decals reproduce the distinctive national aircraft markings used by the Fuerza Aérea del Perú (FAP) and the Aviación Naval del Perú. Both designs are based on Peru’s national colors of red and white, while the naval version adds a prominent black anchor to clearly identify aircraft operated by the Peruvian Navy.
Peruvian military aviation traces its modern origins to 1919, when the Servicio de Aviación Militar del Ejército del Perú was established. The familiar Peruvian aircraft roundel was adopted during the early 1920s and consists of concentric red, white, and red circles. After several organizational changes, the service officially became the Fuerza Aérea del Perú in 1950.
The FAP underwent major modernization during the Cold War. Jet aircraft such as the T-33 and Hawker Hunter entered service during the 1950s, followed by the Mirage 5P in the late 1960s. During the 1970s and 1980s, Peru added A-37 Dragonflies, Su-22 Fitters, Soviet-built helicopters, and Mirage 2000 fighters. Later acquisitions included the MiG-29 and Su-25, creating one of South America’s most diverse combat-aircraft inventories.
Peruvian Naval Aviation has separate roots dating to 1919 and was re-established as an independent naval aviation organization in 1963. Its national marking uses the basic red-white-red Peruvian roundel combined with a black naval anchor, immediately distinguishing Navy aircraft from those of the Air Force.
The Peruvian Navy has operated a broad range of maritime aircraft and helicopters. During the Cold War its aviation arm acquired S-2F Tracker anti-submarine aircraft, Fokker F-27MP maritime patrol aircraft, AB-212 anti-submarine helicopters, and Sea Kings. These aircraft performed maritime patrol, anti-submarine warfare, reconnaissance, transport, and fleet-support missions.
