Historical Information
Earlier Ethiopian aircraft carried an imperial-style roundel that incorporated a central star. After the revolution, the air force progressively adopted new republican and socialist-era markings. The exact appearance evolved during the Derg period, and older and newer styles could overlap on aircraft as fleets were repainted or transferred between units.
The late 1970s brought a major change in Ethiopian military aviation. Following the shift away from the United States and toward the Soviet Union, Ethiopian fighter units converted from aircraft such as the F-86 Sabre and F-5 to Soviet types including the MiG-21 and MiG-23. Helicopters such as the Mi-8 and Mi-24 also became important during the Ogaden War and later conflicts.
These markings are especially appropriate for aircraft representing the Ogaden War, Derg-era Ethiopia, and the later Cold War period.
Ethiopian roundels changed more than once after 1974, and older markings sometimes remained visible after newer versions appeared. For a specific aircraft, reference photographs are the best guide to the exact roundel style and placement for a given year.
